Waste management is an issue for many coastal districts of Sri Lanka, especially densely populated and industrialized ones such as Gampaha. In Dikkowita between Colombo and Negombo, SLYCAN Trust is working with the Marine Environment Protection Authority and other government institutions on a multi-stakeholder driven plan to clean up the polluted canals and mangrove lagoons, introduce waste collection nets to the source of waste flowing in to the area of restoration, and establish a waste management plan for the entire area.
