Agroforestry systems present an integrated solution to climate change, biodiversity loss, environmental degradation, and the need for poverty reduction, universal food security, and sustainable development.
By combining the sectors of agriculture, forestry, and biodiversity, they can provide sustainable and resilient income sources for farmers and other community members, contribute to climate change mitigation, conserve soil, watersheds, ecosystems, and wildlife, counteract deforestation, and serve as a catalyst for women empowerment and household access to nutrition.
This research brief has been prepared based on research conducted on a global level as well as on a national level in Sri Lanka as part of the project “Participatory NDCs for a Climate-Just Response in a COVID-19 World.” Data was collected through a comprehensive literature review as well as through a series of in-person, hybrid, and virtual workshops, national dialogues, group meetings, webinars, and expert discussions.
